Day 7: Grand Canyon to Albuquerque New Mexico
-7am
Wakeup and pack the meat machine for the day
-7:30am
Depart the Grand Canyon Campsite and head towards the town of Cameron, AZ. Leaving the park we were reminded of just how big this place is, it takes about an hour of 50+ mph driving to get from the center of the south rim to the exit of the park. This road out of the park also happened to be the route we took into the park in the pitch black the other night, so getting to see the canyon from that road was a pretty good morning goodbye
-11:16am
Somewhere on the Hopi Indian Reservation in Arizona. We took this route to get to our next destination because it cut through a chunk of desert that we would’ve totally avoided if we took the highway. We pulled over to get some drone footage, and wound up founding an abandoned pickup truck that had fallen into a valley of rocks. The shots from this quick unexpected pull over turned out to be pretty cool, will def use them somewhere in the future
-1pm
Petrified Forest National Park. I had found this place on google maps before actually starting our trip, and it looked pretty cool from some of the pictures on there. I was wrong. Besides the initial petrified wood, which basically looks like rocks, there was literally nothing else in this park. It kinda sucked
-1:45pm
Dusted the National Park and was back on the road. That was definitely a waste of time, 3/10 would not recommend
-2:33pm
Crossed the border from Arizona to New Mexico, we’re finally heading back towards home. Since we left Pennsylvania, we’ve been on this absurd hunt to find a parked abandoned train in the desert so we could climb on it and and film cool stuff, but had yet to find a parked train. For now, our eyes were peeled on the side of the highway looking for out prized choo-choo. (Yes I understand we sound like 11 year old's)
-3:30pm
Found our train. Somewhere in the New Mexican desert on the side of the highway were 2 parked trains, with a super cool cliff in the background, we had finally found it. Now we just needed to figure out how to get off the highway and drive to the tracks. When we finally figured it out, the trains had started to move, so now we had to chase the train down over 2 miles away using a drone, just to get this picture…
-5:30pm
Taqueria Mexico. This was a super authentic hole in the wall kind of Mexican restaurant. It looked more like a shed, had a line out the door, and the people there barely spoke english. We both got massive burritos, and according to the toothless / homeless guy in there with us “If you guys finish those, you’re some bad motherf**kers”. Well we indeed are “bad motherf**kers” because we sure as hell finished those beasts of burritos. If you glued 3 chipotle burritos together, you’d get one of these monsters
-6:15pm
Days Inn. On our drive for the day, we decided that camping in a city was definitely a stupid idea, and I was not about to sleep on a piece of plywood for the 3rd night in a row. We found a Days Inn hotel for a whopping $49, and booked it faster than you can say cockroach. When we finally arrived at this place, it smelled like a dog pooped all over it, it was dark and dingy, and we realized we probs should’ve spent over $24.50 a person for the night. Thankfully we used the parental backup card and Mrs. Bresnan hooked us up with a Marriott to stay in. Thank god
-7pm
Marriott, somewhere in Albuquerque, NM. This place was about a million times nicer than our Days Inn fiasco, and after a long day we settled in, watched the movie Cars (yes the children’s movie from 2006) and passed out in real beds not consisting of deflated air mattresses and plywood. Tomorrow we are off to the metropolis of Oklahoma City with a couple of stops along the way, lets see what happens
