Day 8: Albuquerque to Oklahoma City
-7am
Wakeup
-7:40am
Departure
-9:45am
Pulled off the highway because we found a freight train that was stopped on it’s tracks, and looked like it was easy to climb on. We went to photo town and snapped a bunch of pics and videos on the train to see if we could get any cool footage
-10:25am
Tucumcari, NM. Stopped in this town along the original route 66 at a trading post I had read about online. I think I’m slowly turning into my mom (Lizagna) because for some reason I kept wanting to check out antiques places along the way. This place was super cool from the outside, but since the owner wasn’t there we never had a chance to actually go inside to see what was happening. Maybe someday
-11:40am
Just crossed the border from New Mexico into the top chunk of Texas. The time has just changed to central time, it’s now 12:40pm
-1:47pm
I had done some probing around on google maps this morning during Greg’s driving shift, and I found this really cool thing called “Cadillac Ranch”. A dude basically half buried about 8 1960’s Cadillac cars in a field somewhere outside of Amarillo, Texas. People come from all over and spray paint these things, so naturally it was a great spot to snap some pics and see what was going on
-2:10pm
Sonic Drive Thru: Amarillo, Texas. I had found this super cool restaurant right off of the highway that I really wanted to try, but this place was open from 11am-2:30pm, and after the stupid timezone change, we were cutting it pretty damn close by getting there at 2:10pm. Being such a small place, there was literally nobody there, and the place was already closed so we hiked over across the street to the local sonic and wound up eating a combined 4,567 calories for lunch… My stomach was pissed
-3:45pm
Shamrock, Texas. If you’ve seen the animated movie “Cars” there is one building in the movie that serves as this one dude’s paint shop along the fake version of route 66. Well apparently this place is real, so naturally we decided to check it out. Look at the comparison below from the movie to the real deal
-4:16pm
Just left Texas and now headed into Oklahoma
-5:09pm
Clinton, OK. There’s not much going on here (Literally not even a town) but for some reason everything is really dark on the highway and it smells like a forest fire. It doesn’t seem like there are many forests around here, so maybe it’s more of a brush fire somewhere near here that’s making it all so hazy
-6:30pm
Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Downtown Oklahoma City. We stopped here, the memorial of the 1995 OKC bombing, to check out where the building once was, and learn more about what happened. The memorial was really nice, and everyone there seemed respectful, quiet, and peaceful. The memorial consists of two large metal walls on either end with a reflecting pool in the middle. One wall is stamped ‘9:01’ representing the serenity of the city at 9:01am on the morning of the bombing, and one side is marked ‘9:03’, to represent the moment when the world changed for ever. We didn’t stay here long, but I’m really glad we decided to check it out
-7:00pm
Chipotle: Downtown OKC. After camping for a couple nights in the woods, and driving about 12 hours today, Chipotle was really the only thing we wanted to eat, and thankfully OKC had a pretty decent one down town
-7:45pm
AirBnb: Yukon, OK. I had found this place on AirBnb a few months ago, and it wound up being something like $43 a person. This place is massive, it’s an entire 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home with a drive way, living room, dinning room, backyard etc. Needless to say we are chillin for the night, and can definitely use a break from driving. For now, morale is high, have a 13 hour trek from here to Nashville, TN tomorrow…
