Day 2: Kansas City to Breckenridge, Colorado
-5:30am
Wakeup
-6am
Had a solid hotel breakfast consisting of frosted flakes, powdered eggs, and the best waffles money can buy
-6:30am
On the road to Breckenridge. lets ride
-6:56am
Just crossed some river, and now in Kansas
-9:09am
Literally no idea where we are, somewhere in the middle of Kansas, this place kinda sucks
-9:35am
We’re somewhere near a town called Wilson, Kansas and it’s windmill city out here. It’s literally so windy that I have the steering wheel turned 1/4 of the way to the right just so I can keep myself pointed straight. To be fair, our 89mph cruise control wasn’t helping much
-9:59am
First official stop of the day: Russell, Kansas. Fueling up the meat machine, this beast is sucking fuel faster than a frat star doing a keg stand. Here you can see meat machine in its natural habitat
-10:49am
Fernch tags out of driving for the day, Bres is up to bat. Would guesstimate we are roughly 60% across the tumbleweed wasteland that is Kansas
-12:02pm
Crossed into Mountain time, now officially 11:02am. Slight side note observation: Kansas seems to have more museums than they know what to do with. Museums about planes, museums about plants, museums about cars, museums about Dwight D. Eisenhower. This place is whack
-11:26am
Just entered Colorado, might as well be Kansas with how flat this place is
-12:49pm
First sight of the rocky mountain front range, its nice to see something other than flat, dead grass
-2pm
Stuck in Denver traffic, for being over a mile above sea level, this place is the warmest it’s been our whole trip. 75 degree chillin
-2:45pm
Stopped in the town of Georgetown, CO. for a bathroom break. Breck is so close I can smell it
-3:23pm
Finally made it to Aunt Krissy & Uncle Johnny’s house. As we were pulling into the road that they live on, the two of them were pulling out and heading into town and the timing could not have been more perfect. They led us up the hill to their house, and my god they live at the top of a mountain. Wasn’t sure if the meat machine would be able to power through the 2 feet of packed snow up a 10% grade, but my new Kumho tires powered me up to the top no problem. (Sorry to nerd out, but my tires are freaking sick)
-4:36pm
Uncle Johnny took us into town and took us up the gondola to the base lodge at Breckenridge. Although the gondola only goes from the town parking lot to the base lodge, it’s still a solid 30min round trip, and you climb about 1,000 vertical feet. Super cool way to take in the sights after being stuck in a car for 12 hours straight
-5:15pm
Stopped in town to check out some shops, went full fledged tourist mode (yes I spent $54.36 on 2 t-shirts and a sticker that I can guarantee I won’t put on anything in my life), then grabbed a beer at a cool local bar on Main Street
-7pm
Back at the house, Aunt Krissy made some kick-ass ribs and some super mega chicken bacon ranch pasta dish that I could literally live on for the rest of my life. Here’s a pic of the boys at dinner, and a pic of me, Aunt Krissy, and Uncle Johnny. (somehow I’m the only one with their eyes open in this pic?? I’m still gonna give an A for effort here)
-10pm
Me and Greg are literally toast and I don’t even know what country I’m in, or what my name is that’s how tired I am. I’m team bed time. Can not explain how hype we are to be sleeping in a house with awesome people, warm beds, and warm showers. 5 days of sleeping in a tent and possibly no showers here we come. Road to Moab Utah in the morning.
